This is an authentically scary and brutal Macbeth. Macbeth (1971), directed by Roman Polanski This was the first film Polanski made after his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson family. Jeremy Irons is mesmerising as the dying king, and Simon Russell Beale makes an excellent Falstaff. I prefer Eyre’s 2012 version, which formed the centrepiece of the BBC’s lavish Hollow Crown series.

Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2 (2012), directed by Richard Eyre The critic Kenneth Tynan called the two parts of Henry IV “the twin summits of Shakespeare’s achievement.” Film buffs will tell you that Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight (1965) is the best movie of the Henry plays. The top five Shakespeare film adaptations Watching it, you get a glimmer of the excitement that Shakespeare’s audiences must have felt when seeing the play for the first time. Twenty-five years after its release, the movie still feels vibrant and brand-new. In Hamlet, Shakespeare threw everything at his audience but the kitchen sink.īranagh did the same in his film. It’s got everything: ghosts, murder, swordplay, political intrigue, X-rated puns. As Dr Johnson was the first critic to observe, Hamlet’s outstanding feature is its variety. What makes Branagh’s film so great? For one thing, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s best play. It’s Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, which came out in 1996. For my money there’s no doubt about the best. Some are good, some are bad, and some are both at once.

More big-budget Hamlets and Macbeths have been made than you can shake a stick at. It’s a different story with the major plays. But they preserved some fine performances, and when it comes to rarely acted plays like Troilus and Cressida, the BBC films are the only productions you’re ever likely to see. These productions don’t look great by today’s standards.

Back in the late ’70s and early ’80s, the BBC made TV films of every extant Shakespeare play. If you’re prepared to invest in some DVDs, your options multiply.
